Top 5 Reasons to Enjoy a Long Drive to Work
79
The drive to and from my present job is a one and a half hour round trip.
When I first took the assignment, I thought, "Oh crap, that’s a lot of driving to do every day. That’s really going to suck!"
However, I’ve come to enjoy the drive, and actually look forward to it.
Just recently, I accepted a position only five minutes from my house, and will be starting within the next two weeks. Now that I know I won’t be making the long commute anymore, I find myself waxing poetic about the whole thing.
So, while making one of the last of my long drives this morning, I thought up this list.
The top 5 reasons to enjoy your long drive to work.
#5- Any place you want to stop, anything you want to do, any item you may need to pick up, you will find it along the way
I drive past no less than 12 McDonalds, 24 gas stations, 9 QuikTrips, 5 hospitals, and countless other merchants and amenities.
Bail Bonds? at least 7.
Chinese Food? try 11.
Health Food Stores? 4.
Not to mention 3 libraries, 2 main post offices, Costco, Sam’s Club,
a barn museum, a Junior College, and not one, but two spray-on-truck-bed-liner shops!
#4- Free-to-be-me time
You are all alone in this personal little kingdom called your vehicle. Here is the chance to be your own unique self. You can turn up the music (which I will get to in a moment) and practice singing harmony. Sure it sounds awful. But the Royal Highness of the automobile can sing badly if she wants.
You can play the best steering-wheel drums ever. Or pick your nose. Or scratch where it itches.
Nobody is really watching you; they’re too busy being the master of their own motorized domain.
#3- A great chance to listen to your favorite music, and learn about new artists.
I am totally hooked on satellite radio. No matter what your listening tastes are, they have got what you like. And, for the most part, no commercials! I am not a fan of morning talk radio, seems like those guys are just talking to make noise. I’d rather listen to Wilco or My Morning Jacket. Or Bob Dylan's ThemeTime radio hour. With satellite radio, you are exposed to artists that you just won’t find out about on commercial radio. My system displays the artist and the song, which is a big plus.
This is also an excellent time to actually listen to an entire CD of music. No, I don’t have a MP3 player to plug in, (guess I’m still old-school) I actually buy CDs. There’s something to be said about listening to an entire CD instead of an assortment of scrambled tracks. It's like the difference between reading a novel and reading a collection of short stories.
Plus, you still get to sing your heart out (see reason #4)
#2- Keep up on world events
Listen to Public Radio on your drive to work. You can find out what is actually going on in the rest of the world. The war in Iraq and Afghanistan. The conflict in Israel and Palestine. The unrest in China. Cuba. Darfur. Important things we seem to miss on the evening news, even if we actually watch it.
#1- Time to collect your thoughts and have some precious time alone
I’ve done some of my best problem solving in the car by
myself. You have time to really think
things through. If you know you are
going to face a difficult or awkward situation, practice (out loud) what you
want to say. Do some brainstorming. This is a great time to collect your
thoughts, think of new ideas, and tumble around some solutions. It is a little difficult to take notes, that is one drawback.
Precious Alone Time-- This is your private time. You don’t have to do anything for anybody. Your mission is to get yourself to where you are going. It’s all about you.
Youyouyou.
Just make sure to put your cell phone on silent and subsequently ignore it, stay out of the passing lane, and watch out for crasy-ass drivers.

Aah yes, sleeping or dreaming is taboo while driving!
You're lucky you know to have nice clean roads and not the chaotic and congested traffic and roads we deal with here in India! But, as you say, we all have to learn to make the best of what is dealt out to us! :)
I agree. I enjoy the long drive in the morning time especially. I am slow to getting fully functional in the mornings and the drive time helps me to get focused for the day. The drive home gives me a chance to let out the "steam" or stress of the day and helps to not take work home once I get out of the vehichle.
Elisa, I am quite intersted in your blog. I have read it and found it quite amusing. I am myself a traveler and love to go on long drive. You have posted lovely and creative pictures.
Great hub. I have a forty to fifty minute drive each way to work, and I do like the free time too. You hit on all the good stuff too. I totally do stop and pick up whatever I need because I do pass by some of everything (lol @ 2 truck bed liner places... not sure why, but that cracked me up.) And you didn't really point it out, but your last picture suggests the thing I do a lot on top of your list, which is check out people. My drive is through the city, so I people watch at intersections and stuff. In fact, the last two Fridays have had the delighted benefit of a full-on bikini car wash at a Shell station on my way home which is just plain great commuter joy for a guy sitting in his truck with the tunes cranked and waiting out a four minute red-light in traffic.
Fun read, a thumbs up from me.
Great hub! I love how you took your long drive and turned it into something to enjoy and to have fun while driving. Great hub!
Yep, you hit the nail! :)
Fabulous. The only thing better is commuting on the train so you can lose yourself in a book! Good luck on the HubNugget challenge. MM
How typical of human nature that we appreciate something only when we're about to lose it! And yet there are probably a lot of things you can do in five minutes too! :)
Elisabeth, what a great read. Many of us face that long drive every day to and from our day jobs. I have long felt exactly the same, but never thought to express it. Great idea for a hub, and you make it an easy read. Loved it.
Congratulations on your HubNugget Wannabe nomination, and good luck!
Having used to commute a long way every day, I really enjoyed someone putting to words some of my own thoughts. It wasn't near the burden people thought it was, I enjoyed the down time. Great hub!
Great hub. I'm looking for work right now and some of the best jobs are some of the furthest away. I've been trying to convince myself of the benefits of a long commute, but you've done a much better job on me than I was doing on myself!
Excellent hub Elisabeth, I especailly loved the idea of 12 McDonalds on the route, sheer bliss, especially as we don't have MacDonalds here in Guernsey, so I have to wait until I visit the UK mainland and eat as many as I can during my time there.
The other true point I liked was the chance to problem solve whilst you are driving, I too used to find this time helpful during a time in the UK when I had an 90 minute drive to work, and a 90 minute drive home again.
What I guess too, is that long drives are a great opportunity to think up ideas for new hubs :)
Great hub. Reminds me why I love driving =). Unfortunately, I'm used to driving an automatic car but since we have a manual (stick-shift) car, I don't drive anymore =(.
hehehe, can't drive stick. I'm what they call a "clutch driver". It will be like stopping and going all the time LOL.
Elisabeth, I can relate! When I discover that traffic puts me on the road for the longest time, I use this time to do #1: quiet time for myself. And I enjoy that. Or I listen to some music or audio teaching. Time flies then. :) Congrats for being a Hubnugget Wannabe!
Be sure to vote and promote, okay? Don't hesitate to tell your friends to vote for you. Yes, you can do this. :) Here is the link: http://hubpages.com/_hubnuggets10/hub/new-authors
Great piece and put together well with a lot of personality. :)
Congrats on your nomination. Very good read! I could relate to a lot of what you said, having commuted 1 ½ to 2 hrs a day the better part of the last 20 years. I did indeed come up with a lot of good treatment ideas for my clients on my drives. Since my retirement from the Air Force in Dec however, the only thing I miss about the driving is Howard Stern.
It takes about an hour everyday to my work place. This hub answers my daily problem.thank for sharing.
Nice blog! I love to drive; I have driven sixteen out of twenty four hours one day (with breaks). Driving alone is a great way to spend time with yourself. Cheers!
I've used long drives for listening to various trainings I have recorded. It may not seem like fun but I actually enjoy it. It's my time to do what I like--learn about things that interest me.
And this year I have begun a long commute getting my daughter to school. Driving is lovely time for us to chat about what she thinks.
Thank you for the nice hub.
Julia
Now that is some drive!!! Great Hub
It's like you are in the car with me when I have to do a lot of driving. Great hub :)
I enjoyed reading your hub. What a great perspective on a long commute. You have made a positive "pivot point" from what many people consider a negative - you made a positive in a fun way.
Nice hub. Enjoyed it. I am also driving 1.30 hrs daily
Refreshing!
Best program to make money.
Thanks
I absolutely loved this! What a great way to turn a not-so-pleasant-situation into a thing of joy.
See, I knew I shouldn't become your fan, your are great, and I am reading, reading, reading your hubs.
This reminds me of when I was in the driving business. I'd drive about 300 hundred miles a day, yes I said 300. And I agree about the CD, I use to learn, verbatim, most of the songs of my favorite artists. Although I had several routes, I, too, would remember certain things along those routes. Oops, here I go again, trying to rewrite your hub, very well done, another "up" vote.
omg haha!! :D you have a great sense of humor! and you're right. good music is key. some good music for long drives for me is 'suzy q' by ccr, anything by zz top, and 'family affair' by mary j blige, among others. rock on!
Well done elsabeth.... driving can be a fun, reflective opportunity. I find having to drive in any city environment very frustrating though...... give me the open road any day and then I can let my mind unwind. Thanks
Cheers Dags the Drover

What a wonderful and delightful hub, Elisabeth, on a subject no one else would ever think about - at least not before or after each long commute! You are going to be losing out on a lot of precious time by taking on the new job which is closer! :)
